parakeet
Last Wednesday as Sam and I walked home after a run I looked down to see a beautiful bird hopping around in the street. It took me a minute to realize that it was a parakeet and should not technically be on the street. That and he/she had a band on it’s leg. Needless to say we are now temporarily taking care of a parakeet while I either find it’s owner of the rescue people find it a new owner.
It’s a cute little thing but wow, birds stink. They also make your cat go crazy. Poor Miah has been doing this all week:

stalking
She has barely been able to sleep her requisite 20 hours a day, every time the bird makes a noise she has to dart in there and investigate.

The lights and darks are from a Hoffman Bali pop. The pattern is another Cozy Quilt Design pattern Multifaceted. This one for some reason felt like it took more thinking and effort to put together. It was mostly me and not actually the pattern, I spent too much time over-thinking the color placement.
A garden!

rocket
When my mother and step-father were visiting we dug up and started a garden and it is finally getting going! After some stress at the beginning due to some little animal thinking that I had planted it it’s own private dining area the plants are rebounding and moving full steam ahead.

tomato flowers
We have planted tomatoes, rocket (arugala), peppers, peas, squash, chard, beans and carrots. Hopefully the carrots and beans will come up this time otherwise I guess we’ll try again.

black and white quilts
I finished these two tops a couple of weeks ago but haven’t been able to focus enough when looking at my computer to post them. The pattern was Box Step the black and white came from the monthly happy hour class that I go to at the Granary. They’re started alternating 2 1/2″ strip sets and fat quarter sets this year and I’ve really enjoyed the change.
The quilts were super easy to put together and as long as I kept my stacks organized it didn’t require too much thinking either. I ended up having enough to make 2 of the throw size quilts. I think they’d be great on toddler beds that were in the same room since I flipped the white and black blocks on each one so they sort of have a mirror feel to them.

Amish Abstractions Exhibit

This weekend I was able to sneak in a brief visit to the de Young museum’s exhibit of Amish quilts titled Amish Abstractions. The quilts all come from a private collection of quilts and are nothing short of stunning. They are truly gorgeous and if you are in San Francisco and have the chance to stop by and see it I highly recommend it. My favorite was the crazy quilt for the exquisite hand embroidery. The other ones I especially liked were the old maids puzzle and the broken star. I wasn’t able to spend as much time as I would’ve liked there since a certain 2 year old woke up from her stroller nap early but I’m glad I was able to go at even get a brief look at them.

We also stopped by the California Academy of Sciences as well as the Japanese tea gardens. We couldn’t have asked for better weather or a better treat on the way back to the car, a mama duck and her brood of ducklings have taken up residence in the pond outside the de Young. So exciting!

The cape

Sam had been wearing her sleepers around the house the last few weeks calling them her cape. I finally broke down and took her to pick out some fabric for a real cape. She picked 2 of the most annoying fabrics to sew with but boy oh boy were the results were worth it. I used the Puking Pastilles tutorial for the general design idea. I’m so happy that she likes it!

We recently found out that Chris’s cousin is ill. I couldn’t do anything to help in person being a continent away, so I made her something to stay warm with.
We love you and are thinking of you everyday.

We had some adventures last week while my parents were visiting. Here is a glimpse of a few of the things we did.

We have spent the better part of this week recovering. Phew!
